WANGTED: ARC-4

by

Wanted: ARC-4 WW II VHF Aircraft Radio. Also known as: AN/ARC-4, RT-19, WE-223. These radios used a single 832A in the final and were about 15 to 20 watts out on VHF (amplitude modulated) with a rather numb channelized dual front end receiver. Often converted to amateur radio 2 meter service with various types of receiver mods and replacement of 28 V dynamotor power with AC supply. Wanted to complete vintage ham station replica. Need not be in original condition; converted or partially converted is OK.

CH-291 Battery Box - U.S. Army

by

Hello. Are you still interested in purchasing a CH291 Battery box? I have one, with only one of the three 2v batteries in it. The battery is dated 4 of 1945. The box is around the same age as well. The box is in good condition for its age, with very minor surface rust. The 2 Comm ports used in this box, however, are not there. The actual plug is gone and it is just a hole in the box now. The O-Ring seal for the lid is flawless, and still seals great. The glass side pieces are not broken nor have they been replaced. If you are interested, please email me back. My email is richmccaig@yahoo.com Thanks.

BC 1000 battery box

by Dallas

Unfortunately there are none out there. The last one I sold went for $400.They will sell for more than the radios. The Greek government has surplused out about 65 sets all with no battery boxes so I have a list of guys looking.I have been in the restoration bussiness for nearly 40 years and I know every where in the world to look and there are none. The reason they have no battery boxes is because the Greeks like the Italians used the BC 1000 battery boxes with their post WWII British WS31 radio so that the US harness and belt could be used with WS31.

Resistance Unit

by

Hi Jacky

Many thanks for your response, I understand the difference between the two was that one was 12 volt and the other was 24 volt, other than that I think they were identical. So as it is for display purposes either would suit me. Are you offering them for sale? If so what do you have in mind for them? By the way, are you in UK? Regards, Dave.

FS: Homebrew Tube Transmitter

by

FOR SALE: Homebrew Tube Transmitter
Has 807 final and Collins VFO built-in.

Looks like a Collins 310B or 310C is the VFO-exciter in this rig.
This is obviously a homebrew project that used the Collins PTO as the main control for the exciter.

Has a different front panel etc. from the typical Collins equipment
Yet it clearly bears some resemblance. Has a built in 120V AC power supply.
Will sell for $125.00 plus shipping

FS: EF Johnson Transmitter

by

FS: E.F. Johnson Viking Valiant Transmitter

Specifications:
CW - 275 Watts, AM 200 Watts

Bands: 160m through 10m

1.75 MHz to 2.0 MHz (160 m)
3.5 MHz to 4.0 MHz (80/75 m)
7.0 MHz to 7.42 MHz (40 m)
14.0 MHz to 14.85 MHz (20 m)
21.0 MHz to 21.6 MHz (15 m)
26.9 MHz to 27.36 MHz (11 m)
28.0 MHz to 29.7 MHz (10 m)

Antenna loads 50 to 600 ohms. Well-shielded for TVI and RFI suppression.
Silver plated tank coil. Break in keying and PTT system built-in.
VFO dial moves smoothly, and all tuning caps and iron are in good shape.
Transformers and tubes have been tested.

Dimensions: 21-1/8" wide, 17-3/8" deep and 11-5/8" high.

Has not been recapped or restored, but everything is there, and in good condition
and it has a new 3-way AC power cord that has been installed for safety.
Crystal cover is missing. Microphone connector was changed to a standard 1/4" style
plug instead of original 2-prong unshielded connector.
VFO, Band switch, loading switch and caps, meter etc. are all in good shape.

The pictures were taken before the 6146 mod tubes were installed. Comes with a copy
of the manual. The rig comes with all of the screws - the four long cabinet screws
and the original rear apron screws - all in clean shape.

This Valiant has no major issues, and it will make a great project and will
clean up very nicely. Just needs a little spit and shine - you could maybe repaint
the caibinet, but it is really not bad as-is. I have recently seen
these going for $1395.00 fully restored.

Re: history of my bc191x.

by Mike

Hi Peter,

The BC-191 was mostly used on ground radio installations but you are correct
that it is similar to the BC-375, which was used in heavy aircraft. I think
most BC-191 transmitters had a 12 volt power supply but as yours has a 24/28
volt supply then it could very likely have been used in an aircraft. It is
an American radio, any you have seen with French markings will have been
marked after building or marked as a special order for France. American
aircraft like the B-17 and C-47 that carried the BC-375 where used a lot by
the French Air Force after WW2.

The BC-191 and BC-375 were manufactured in the USA. The BC-191
was used as a ground-based radio system with the BC-312 and BC-342
receivers. The BC-375 was an aircraft transmitter used with the BC-348
receiver. I am curious, though, that your BC-191 transmitter is said to
operate on 24-28 volts. Given the difficulty, principally mechanically,
required in modifying this unit from 12 to 24 volts, I wonder if it is,
in reality, a BC-375? There were many many BC-191 and BC-375 units
available as surplus after WWII. There really would not have been the
necessity to modify these units. But, anything is possible! Is the
original General Electric name plate on the front panel? The BC-191 had
some connections made via connectors on the bottom of the transmitter,
the BC-375 did not. The BC-375 has three large connectors on the left
side, the BC-191 has four. This may give you some additional clues. The
24/28 volt switch you speak of was to allow the unit to be ground or
radio-shop tested using 24 volts and then switched back to 28 volts for
normal aircraft use. The radio technician could switch back and forth
as needed.

For information, after WWII, many airlines tried to use the BC-375 and
the ART-13. The ART-13 was infinitely more successful and was used well
into the 1950's by the US military and airlines, albeit with some
modifications. My particular ART-13 was used in a NASA aircraft into the
1960's, as indicated by the date on the frequency chart. It sounds as
though your unit may have been obtained by either the French military or
an airline and used either in aircraft or as a ground station. In the
40's and 50's, many airlines had extensive HF ground stations to be able
to talk to their aircraft in flight and at long distances. Although not
quite as extensive, this very much continues, today.
