I was wondering why is it back in the day when you got AIDS you were gay??? I never quite got that. I mean didn't other people get AIDS too, I mean people who are straight. Was it cause it was anal sex??? That just confuses me

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the HIV virus. It is passed primarily through blood. Anal sex often cause very small tears inside the rectum and make it easy to spread HIV.

The first person known to have AIDS in the US was a airline pilot. He was gay and had sex with only gay men. The men he had sex with were also gay men who evidently also only had sex with gay men. Since alot of these men were connected to the airlines they traveled a lot and the disease spread very quickly among gay men all over the world- but mostly in more affluent countries.

The first person to have AIDS in Africa was probably a straight man, because in Africa AIDS is mostly a straight disease.

Some of the men who had HIV/ AIDS gave blood. People who have hemophilia need a lot of blood transfusions. So a lot of people with Hemophilia got HIV/ AIDS before we learned to test blood properly.

Some gay men also use injectable drugs. The blood on the needles they shared recklessly would get transmitted from one person to another. Again in the beginning the people who use drugs together are likely of the same sexual orientation.

HIV/ AIDS got spread into the heterosexual population in a variety of ways. Most of the people with hemophilia were straight. Some of the people gay men shared needles with men and women. But perhaps the biggest way was gay men who were bisexual and had sex with men and sex with their wives and girlfriends. They might or might noit have used protection when then had sex with men, but if their girlfriends thought they were in a monogamous relationship it was very unlikely they used condoms whe they had sex with them.

In the US the largest number of people who are acquiring HIV/AIDS is currently minority men - who are only 50% likely to be gay or bisexual. It is no longer a gay disease although it stil affect gay men in larger numbers than most other people.
