Biology Question

Hey Susan,

I've been wondering this for quite a while but no one can really give me a straight answer and i can't find it on the net, b/c i don't really know what to search.

So, why is that some girls (and few guys) have puffy nipples while others have "normal" nipples. I know there is a little mass underneath that causes it to puff out but why does it form. What causes this? Does it go away ever or can you get rid of it?

Thanks as always!

- Mike

Mike,

I can only guess at the answer - but here goes

I think the difference you are describing is not really a breast difference, but a nipple difference.

Different nationalities, families seem to have slightly different nipple structures.  So I would think it is genetic - like eye color. And that would mean there is nothing you can do to change it.

BUT some people do go to extreme meaures to change the shape of their bodies and people can chane their nipple from being not very prominent to prominent thru the use of what are commonly thought of as nipple torture devices.

Mike,

Like Susan said, there are genetic traits you inherit from your parents that affect the size of your nipples. I'm assuming that when you say 'puffy nipple' you mean the whole dark pigmented area of the breast, the areola.

Behind the areola there are different kinds of tissue, among them fat, glands, and blood vessels. Different people have these tissues distributed in different ways, which can mean that there is a larger mass of tissue behind the areola in some. The shape of the areola is also controlled by circular muscle fibers around the areola and vertical muscle fibers in the nipple (together they are the machinery that makes your nipple hard or soft). The shape these muscles take when the nipple is relaxed or erect can also affect the appearance of the areola.

In men puffy areolae can be associated with gynecomastia (the development of 'female-like' fatty breasts) or extensive muscle building in the chest area. In women areolae may become temporarily puffy when nursing. It is common for both sexes to experience puffy areolae during puberty while changes are taken place in the body, because hormones can promote the development of breast tissue. People who have tubular breast syndrome may also experience puffy areolae.

If a person has puffy areolae and is going through puberty, changing hormones may 'correct' this problem and even out the fatty tissue in the breast as the person develops. (Though many do not view it as a problem and find it attractive!) If a person naturally has puffy areolae and is embarrassed by them, one option is Puffy Areolar Reduction (a type of Areolar Reduction surgery) in which some of the tissue under the areola is removed. This is a cosmetic surgery usually done by the same doctors who do breast reductions, lifts, and augmentations.

If you wanted to try learning more on the net, you might try searching for puffy areola, puffy areolar reduction, areola reducion, gynecomastia, breast development, and tubular breast syndrome.
