When you have a cold sore you should not have sex of any kind. A cold sore - which is a form of herpes - can pass from the mouth to the genitals or to eyes and vice versa. So although it could be other things - the fact your got the mouth ulcers/canker sores/cold sores about the same time as the spot on your tongue which was after having sex you need to get tested immediately. You and she could both have herpes.

You need to go to your doctor or to a sexually transmitted disease clinic asap.

That's weird that cold sores are a form of herpes. I read that somewhere before too. I had a total of 2 cold sores on my lip a few years ago, glad I don't get those anymore (good I didn't have a b/f at the time). So if you have a cold sore and you have sex then it becomes a herpe? That's just wrong lol. Did I get this right??

"the virus hangs around in your body forever, so chances you'll get a cold sore more than once." hat's awful. So I may get it again someday?! That sucks. Wht if I apply abreva cold sore lip balm everyday, will that prevent it from re-appearing, these buggers are ugly when they are exposed. It takes forever to leave.

No. A cold sore is herpes. There are different kinds of herpes. Chicken pox is a herpes. All forms of herpes are contagious. They are all most contagious just before you see them when the virus is active, but also when then leak the liquid inside the sore.

Herpes Simplex 1 (Cold Sores - above the waist)
Herpes Simplex 2 (Genital herpes - below the waist)
Epstein Barr Virus
Varicella Zoster Virus (Chicken Pox)
Herpes Virus 6 (Roseola)
Herpes Virus 8 (Karposi Sarcoma)
Cytomegalovirus

Herpes simple 1 and 2 are very similar and if you have one and you come in contact with the other half of the body it changes into the other form of herpes.

So if you have herpes 1 and have genital contact you will give your partner herpes but it will become herpes 2 - so then when they have sex with you again they will then give you the herpes 2 they got from you.

Here some technical info about Herpes 1 & 2

Epidemiology

HSV 1 and 2 infections are life-long and although latency is soon set up, the infected patient can infect others as a result of recurrence. The virus is found in the lesions on the skin but can also be present in a variety of body fluids including saliva and vaginal secretions. Despite the apparent above the waist/below the waist rule, both types of HSV can infect oral or genital mucosa depending on the regions of contact (figure 8). However, HSV-1 is usually spread mouth to mouth (kissing or the use of utensils contaminated with saliva) or by transfer of infectious virus to the hands after which the virus may enter the body via any wound or through the eyes. A large proportion of the population has evidence of HSV-1 infection as judged by antibodies. As a result of poor hygiene in underdeveloped countries, HSV-1 antibodies are found in more than 90% of children.

HSV-2 is normally spread sexually and is found in the anus, rectum and upper alimentary tract as well as the genital area.

Anyone who comes in contact with fluid containing infectious virus is at risk. As might be expected, HSV-2 infections are more prevalent later in life as the number of sexual contacts increases. Thus, the lowest rates of infection are found in children and the highest rates in prostitutes among whom as many as 80% are infected with HSV-2.

Once you have herpes you always have herpes. There is no cure. There is nothing that gets rid of it.

There are treatments thats make having herpes more comfortable. Abreva helps a herpes try up- it doesn't prevent it.

Herpes and other sexually transmitted disease is why I have come to be far more conservative about teenagers having sex. Too many teenagers have no idea what risks they take when they have sex and so they take risks that change their life forever.

A one minute sexual encounter when you are 16 can cause a sexually transmitted disease that you will live with for the rest of your life.

You have type 1 - but you could have got it from your girlfriend who could have type 2. And if that is the case it is only a matter of time before you have type 2 too. And believe me type 2 herpes is something NO ONE wants.
