Seasonale prevents all but 4 of your menstrual periods each year. Research hasn't found any reason to require women have monthly menstrual periods. But monthly menstrual periods do provide women - especially young women with markers so they know what is going on with their body.
If you are 16 and sexually active and use Seasonale you could very well be 4 months pregnant before you knew if you didn't have any other signs. And teenage girls often have no signs of pregnancy for the first few months.
Seasonale makes other methods of brith control you migth use with a birth controlpill useless. When I was sexually active and did not want to get pregnant absolutly no matter what I took my temperature each morning so I knew when I ovulated. I I was ovulating - no sex. If I was on Seasonale this wouldn't work.
Break-thru bleeding and spotting are very common the first year. A girl needs to understand when break-thru bleeding is ordinary and when it is cause for concern.
Using Seasonale makes it very hard to get pregnant for a long time after you stop. With regular birth control - you don't take a few pills in a row and you are ready to get pregnant. Seasonale seems to stay in the body much longer interfering (but not preventing) you from getting pregnant for a few months after stopping.
Because of these factors I don't recommend Seasonale to anyone who knows they would get an abortion if they were to get pregnant; to anyone who thinks they might want to get pregnant in less than a year; and for any anyone who is not very familar with the way their body works.
There are a lot of questions about how smart it is to put hormones into a woman's body for 3 out of 4 weeks - there are lots of reasons not to take birth control pills at all. It is thought that not taking them a week each month gives the body a break from them. With Seasonale you get no break.
I can certainly see the advantages of having so few periods - but when I weigh all the facts personally I wouldn't use it until it has been on the market longer.
