Plan B may be over-the-counter for over 18s in the USA.August 1 2006 at 11:36 AM | Susan (Login Xuxan) Forum Owner |
| Plan B - the morning after series of pills may be made legal very soon for women over 18 to buy without a prescription.
There is fear woman may use it instead of using safer sex practices which I think is ridiculous. A woman might use it once that way - but it is no fun to use this method, so I personally think that is no reason not to make sale of it legal over the counter.
I do agree with over 18. Plan B has potential side effects and teenagers too often think they don't need to pay attention to warnings about anything - well enough their health. Plan B requires a woman have some help if after taking it her response to it is bad. To me a teenager is less likely to tell a parent the reason they are in pain and vomiting is that they took the morning after pill. An 18+ year will have friends she can turn to - or be willing to admit what she was doing to her parents.
I also think under 18 year olds may not fully understand what Plan B actually accomplishes. It is not a guarantee that you will not get pregnant. Users of Plan B have to fully understand what is happening with their body when they use it and what they need to be still conscious of for a week or so after taking it.
You have to draw the line somewhere - and I think 18 makes good sense. It is not preventing younger woman from using it - just requiring that they have a conversation with a doctor first.
Contact your elected officials and let them know what you think. |
