Perhaps some of you will have heard the latest Government 'thinking' on this issue, slipped into the news on the quiet. They wish to establish a number of 'pilot zones' to introduce pay as you drive initiatives costing the motorist on average £1.15p per mile !!!.

Have this government gone mad ?. This will be such an unpopular measure that they will have NO HOPE of winning the next election if they try to push this through. Yet more evidence of the motorist 'cash cow' phenomena !

Damn right Dr M!

Why Why WHY! do they still go down this route? I just dont get it?

There is no economical alternative to the car. I live 4 miles away from work. I spend £2.70 single £3.70 return a day with first buses. which a week is £18.50. If my girl friend did the same it will be £37 per week.
We spend £40 every 2 weeks, on petrol and we travel 2 and from work, and go shopping on weekends. So travelling via bus in bristol is twice for me more expensive than current public transport rate.
If they stopped the profitteering and let a little competition in on every routes not just one or 2 routes, then we would have transport at about £1 - £1.50 one way.

But the real issue is, the government has something on the table that keeps making them go down this route.. Like the casinos situation, something is making them sell/buy into this pay per mile scheme... it makes not logic sense.

Also the I predict (my nostradamus moment), that what will happen from this is increased traffic in small back roads, causing major problems to get away from the tolls. Also another effect of this will be people quiting there jobs that live in rural areas of have to travel to work 30miles+ a day to look closer to home, which for most people is hard.. hence the travel!
The best way to deal with the problem with "cars" is to give more carrot and less stick... but the government dont want to do that.. How will share holders cough MPs cough make money if they did...

Regards

Mark..

The simple answer is that they are going to have to make PT much much cheaper than running a car. If they keep bumping up motoring and PT costs like they have been doing for the last 20 yrs then no one is going to use it any more than they do today.

Why o why are these politicians dithering when we all know what needs to be done?
