Typical hours - longer than 9-5, get in earlier, maybe 6-7, get out 5-7; really depends on the rotation. Crime is down somewhat in NYC in recent years; if you get jumped, it's maybe more likely in the street than the subway.
Yes, there is call on some rotations, you stay overnight, and usually they let you go between 10am-2pm the next day. Then the question becomes how often is call, and it might be Q4, every fourth night, or once a week or something like that, unless you're doing some kind of fanatic surgery elective, in which case I've heard tell of Q2. The NY work hours restrictions apply to residents, not to students ....
