I never closed out Help. I did run a global change on the document though.

It seems the global change was in and of itself sufficient to reset whatever needed resetting. If I'd thought of it first, I would have closed Word and reopened it. It just never occurred to me.
I'm one of those people too dumb to own a computer, I swear.
