Piney Rooter,

Regarding your question of August 27th @ 4.17 p.m.

"I see the avoirdupois stone is now 14 avoirdupois pounds. Does anyone know if it was ever 12 or 16 avoirdupois pounds, or some other weight?"

Stone means 14 of the required pounds. There has never been any stone made up of another number.

1 av.gal., or 1 nailwt. = 8 av.lb.
1 av.st. = 14 av.lb.
1 av. peck = 16 av.lb.

1 troy st. = 14 troy lb.
1 troy st. = 11.520 av.lb.
1 merc.st. = 14 merc.lb.
1 merc.st. = 15.360 av.lb.
1 tron st. = 14 tron lb.
1 tron st. = 19.200 av.lb.
1 long st. = 14 long st.
1 long st. = 14.400 av.lb.
1 hans.st. = 14 hans.st.
1 hans.st. = 18.000 av.lb.

The following weights are required as shown below:

1 troy ton = 175 troy lb.
1 merc. ton = 200 troy lb.
1 merc. last = 400 troy lb.
1 troy ton = ---
1 merc. ton = 150 merc.st.
1 merc. last = 300 merc.st.
1 troy ton = 105 tron lb.
1 merc. ton = 120 tron lb.
1 merc. last = 240 tron lb.
1 troy ton = 140 long st.
1 merc. ton = 160 long st.
1 merc. last = 320 long st.
1 troy ton = 112 hans.st.
1 merc. ton = 128 hans.st.
1 merc. last = 256 hans.st.

1 troy ton = 252 av.gal.
1 merc. ton = 288 av.gal.
1 merc. last = 576 av.gal.
1 troy ton = 144 av.st.
1 merc. ton = ---
1 merc. last = ---
1 troy ton = 126 av. peck
1 merc. ton = 144 av. peck
1 merc. last = 256 av. peck

There has never been 12 required pounds of anything in any weights & measures system.

403.200 cu.in. = 14 av.lb. wine

There is an entertainment value, sure.

Banned words!

Can we make a rule that the Av.lb, Av.gallon, etc are not talked about in any forum. This will then hpoefully stop xcole being provoked into putting his meaningless, tedious messages on the message boards.

I disagree - the best ones were from that "Matahari/Anonymous" bird. The infamous "Imperial users are child abusers" post was the best.
Shame there is no way of doing quick searches on these boards so that we can look at some of the classic posts of the past.

I'm still having visions of lorries ramming into the back of white vans!

And the likes of EURobert going blue in the face with rage! (remember him?)
