0.96 Specific Gravity of "Wine"

Bryan,

Regarding your question of February 7th @ 9.37 a.m.

"I know the wine gallon of 230.400 cu.in. contains exactly 8 av.lb. wine. However I cannot take anyone's word for it: I want to verify it, and examine it in detail."

Bryan, you don't say so, but I think you're having difficulty marrying up the term "wine" and 0.96 specific gravity for the fluid gallon of 230.400 cu.in., often referred to as the "wine gallon". Or the more usual, marrying up the term "wine" and 0.96 specific gravity for the fluid ounce of 1.800 cu.in. containing 1 av.oz. wine.

Although you have not mentioned what you have found out, I assume you already know that distilled ethyl alcohol, or "spirit of wine", is 0.79 specific gravity, and fermented wine, or "wine", is 0.98 specific gravity. So where does 0.96 specific gravity "wine" come from?

It doesn't.

"Wine" is just a handy word to cover what liquids we cook and drink, just as "bread" or "corn" or "wheat" are just handy words to cover what foods we cook and eat. Therefore we have the dry gallon of 268.800 cu.in., or "bread gallon" or "corn gallon" or "wheat gallon".

If you flatly insist that "wine" means what it says, you can always go for New Orleans "Southern Comfort" whiskey, as it is about the only "spirit of wine" drink that consistently comes up as 0.96 specific gravity. But "spirit of wine" is not "wine", as it is fermented wine that has been distilled.

However the 1 av.oz. of "wine" for the 1 fl.oz., has no "wine" in it at all, as it consists of only 1/2 av.oz. distilled water & 1/2 av.oz. olive-oil (or any cooking-oil).

1/1000" arc Equator/meridian = 1.216 x 1 in. = 1.216 in.

1 fl.oz. = 1.800 cu.in. =/> 1.216 x 1.216 x 1.216 x 1 in. = 1.798045696 cu.in.
1 fl.oz. = 1.800 cu.in. = 1 av.oz. wine
1 fl.oz. = 1000/960 av.oz. distilled water @ max.dens. 39.2 F
1.728 cu.in. = 1 av.oz. distilled water @ max.dens. = 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.2 x 1 in.
1.728 cu.in. = 1 av.oz. distilled water @ max.dens. = 1.0000000 specific gravity
1.872 cu.in. = 1 av.oz. olive-oil = 0.9230769 (12/13) specific gravity
1.800 cu.in. = 1/2 av.oz. d. water + 1/2 av.oz. olive-oil = 0.9600000 specific gravity
1.800 cu.in. = 1 fl.oz.

1 cu.ft. = 960 av.oz. wine = 1728 cu.in. = 12 x 12 x 12 x 1 in.
1 cu.ft. = 1000 av.oz. distilled water = 1728 cu.in. = 12 x 12 x 12 x 1 in.
1 cu.ft. = 360/6 av.lb. wine = 60 av.lb. wine
1 cu.ft. = 1000/16 av.lb. distilled water @ max.dens. 39.2 F
1 cu.ft. = 1000/16 troy lb. wheat
1 cu.ft. = 360/6 fl.pt. = 60 fl.pt.
1 cu.ft. = 360/7 dry pt.
1 cu.ft. = 360/48 fl.gal.
1 cu.ft. = 360/56 dry gal.

960 fl.oz. = 1 cu.ft. = 4(f.) x 12(d.) x 20(s.) = £1
960 av.oz. wine = 1 cu.ft. = 4(f.) x 12(d.) x 20(s.) = £1

Why not just answer in my thread?????? So it is 0.98... so 8lb of wine is actually 225.96cuin?
