In May 1967, John Davies, the director-general of the Confederation of The Britains Industry and later a minister in Edward Heath's future Conservative & Unionist government, made a speech in California telling americans that the Socialist & Co-operative H.M. Government's measures to keep prices and wages down were working. Enoch Powell was angered not just because a ''representative'' of the forces of capital was collaborating with a socialist government, but also because what Davies was saying was not true. He had been ''brain-washed'' according to Powell. ''If I were a socialist and could listen to the very spokesmen of capitalism thus doing my work for me, I confess I could bear the present election reverses with a light heart.''
