Cleaning Up 'A Very British Mess' in Norfolk

ARM is pleased to report a recent action to help Britain to clear up the 'Very British Mess' described by Lord Howe the other day.

On the A 1101, just south of Welney, is an area of sevaral square miles between the 'Old Bedford River' and the 'New Bedford River' that occasionally becomes seriously flooded.

Some years ago, four 9-feet-tall black-and-white signs were erected, two either side of the rivers, to help drivers see the depth of the waters. About two feet wide, the left-hand sides of these reflective Department for Transport-style signs are calibrated in feet (and half-feet), whilst the right-hand sides were - until very recently - calibrated in units of 0.5 metres - up to just over 2.5 metres in height (= 9 feet). There was a straight black line about half-an-inch wide separating the two sets of calibrations.

The signs were a very clear example of the 'very British mess', as described by Lord Howe, with motorists having to absorb two sets of measurements as they sped past.

Now, however, the entire right-hand sides of the signs have been solidly blacked out with two coats of black cellulose paint.

The result is four stunningly attractive, simple, clear and 'un-messy' signs, giving the depth only in feet on the left-hand sides and with solid black paint on the right-hand sides, with all evidence of the previous metric calibrations permanently obliterated.

They now look so good that they could almost have been designed that way. Since it was Lord Lowe and his acolytes who created the 'very British mess' in the first place, perhaps he'd now like to inspect the 'very British signs' that now enhance the A 1101 near Welney

I sense that this is going to be a red rag to a bull to certain people who post here!

Hear Hear! Well done to whoever did it!
I am amazed at the madness of the metricksters who complain about a mess they caused.

It was only the foreigns who had a mess before, all the rest of us were fine.

thanks for nothing Poly.

Not really Steve. All I can say is that I feel very sorry for anyone prepared to go around taking this sort of desparate action.

It totally misses the point as far as the UKMA report is concerned. Don't confuse the two.

No Confusion Please

re (stan): "Don't confuse the two"

REPLY: Very important, that. Not to get confused. Why, even Lord Howe was confused about whether or not to enforce compulsory metrication when he was in government. He didn't do it when he had the chance; now he wants someone else to do it
