Argos

Have argos recently changed their rules on metric / imperial?

I don't shop there because they deliberately and politically changed to an aggressive pro-metric stance.

However - I saw an advert in the newspaper on Sunday and everything was described in inches (except for liquid stuff like 'smellies').

Does anyone know if they've done (or about to do) a "Tesco" ?

P.S. Their website is still pretty much 90% metric

<<<I don't shop there because they deliberately and politically changed to an aggressive pro-metric stance.>>>

So why is Argos choosing to use metric 'an aggressive pro-metric stance' Please explain.

I thought you were pro-choice, not anti-metric. If Tesco has the right to use the units it chooses, why not Argos?

Tesco undeniably did deliberately and politically change to an agressively pro-imperial stance, but as far as I know Argos isn't pulling any political stunt, merely choosing to use metric.

"So why is Argos choosing to use metric 'an aggressive pro-metric stance' Please explain. "

Cosidering that they even metricated descriptions that normally stay imperial (like internal oven and fridge sizes, bed sizes, scales, bikes etc). They've calmed down a bit recently (having read one of there catalogues).

"I thought you were pro-choice, not anti-metric. If Tesco has the right to use the units it chooses, why not Argos?"

Eh? What? I'm talking about personal choice - not for organisations to choose for us! IF in any doubt they should show both systems like many places already do.

"Tesco undeniably did deliberately and politically change to an agressively pro-imperial stance, "

Er, no they just represented and mirrored what their cusomters wanted. For it to have been politcal they would have reacted to their survey showing a huge favour to imperial by dropping imperial altogether.

"but as far as I know Argos isn't pulling any political stunt, merely choosing to use metric."

Please re-read my original post in relation to what I read in a newspaper.

I can't imagine you complaining if an organisation chose to use imperial only. So if an organisation chooses to use primarily metric, you think they should be forced by law to show imperial as well?

They would have done that, but they knew they wouldn't get away with that, so they hid the metric away as much as they could.

<<<Please re-read my original post in relation to what I read in a newspaper.>>>

So they haven't dropped imperial at all.

Either the law enforces strictly what units organisations have to use, or you let them choose. You can't have it both ways.

Hmm, possibly. There's no garauntee though

<< So if an organisation chooses to use primarily metric, you think they should be forced by law to show imperial as well?>>

No - organisations should be able to operate as much as possible outside the state. I would vote with my feet.

<<<They would have done that, but they knew they wouldn't get away with that, so they hid the metric away as much as they could.>>

On the shelf edge the metric price is just as prominant as the imperial one. Sure the big boards show imperial only but the choice is still there - its not hidden. Besides, some of those big boards even show just metric (eg 1 KG)

<<So they haven't dropped imperial at all.>>

What I am saying is - many years ago they droped imperial totally - they made a big commitment to it (for whatever reason). Now - all of a sudden - I see an ad by them quoting imperial ONLY. I'm just questioning their reasons and if this is a change in policy.

<<Either the law enforces strictly what units organisations have to use, or you let them choose. You can't have it both ways.>>

As far as I know there is no law enforcing catalogue items to be described in metric or imperial. So there is *NO* strict laws. Presumably they could describe items in fractions of a mile if they really wanted to!
