1 fl. jigger = 2.700 cu.’’

Eddie,

‘’The site says a fluid jigger is 1 1/2 fluid ounce, but I thought a fluid jigger was just a small steel container.’’

Eddie, you’re right, you’re wrong, you’re right, and you're wrong.

1 fl. jigger is officially 1 1/2 fl.oz., which means it is unofficially 3 fl.oz.

1 fl. jigger is usually constructed as one steel container, which means it is usually constructed as two steel containers.

1 fl.tbs. = .900 cu.’’
1 fl.oz. = 1.800 cu.’’
1 fl. jigger = 2.700 cu.’’
1 fl. jack = 3.600 cu.’’
1 fl. jill = 7.200 cu.’’
1 fl. cup = 14.400 cu.’’

1 fl. jigger is 1 1/2 fl.oz., and was originally obtained by a length of steel pipe being blocked off half way down its’ length, resulting in a one 1 1/2 fl.oz. container in each end, or 3 fl.oz.

So 1 fl. jigger is 1 1/2 fl.oz.

And it is measured out from a ‘’jigger’’ container containing 3 fl.oz. made up of two containers of 1 1/2 fl.oz.

Wrong as always, at least to the precision implied. 1 gallon = 128 fl oz = 231 in^3

so 1 fl oz = 1 103/128 fl oz = 1.804 6875 fl.oz, 1.805 if you want 4 dign, figures.

1 jigger = 2.707 fl oz.

Rowlett defines a jigger as:

jigger
a unit of volume for liquor, usually considered equal to 1.5 (U.S.) fluid ounces or 44.360 milliliters.

A standard whiskey bottle contains 1.75 L which means you only get 39 jiggers out of a standard bottle with 0.45 jiggers left over. If you redefine the jigger as 43.75 mL then you can get 40 out of standard whiskey bottle. Something tells me though that bartenders across the US just pour the whiskey and don't worry about what a jigger is suppose to be.

I thought "standard" was 750 mL, which replaced a "fifth"?

I guess it depends on what size most people buy. I know wine in the 750 mL size is more common. But with hard whiskey I've seen more of the 1.75 L bottles in people's homes then the 750 mL. To get an even number of jiggers out of either bottle, the jigger would have to be 50 mL and then you get 15 out of a 750 ml bottle and 35 out of a 1.75 L bottle.

I assume then that a "jigger" is what would e called a "tot" in the UK. The legal values in the UK by which spirits may be served are 25ml or 35ml. Since whiskey typically 40% alcohol by volume, it is easy to see that 25ml whiskey contains 10ml alcohol - exactly on "UK unit".

You're lucky he bought you such a nice place. At my house, you'd be in a plastic jigger that probably didn't cost $0.50.

I don't have much use for overpriced barware like this as I don't have a deep inner need to show off my status to my friends. I have never understood the market for stuff like this. It probably isn't even "dishwasher safe" which is more of a criteria for me.
