Imperial Units in America

Dear BWMA:
I am a Southerner from America, and I can tell you from experience, that the "English," or more properly, Imperial System is alive and well in the United States. In fact, our schools are fighting now to overcome the ranks of students who will not use metric units. I must use Metric in only 1 class; my Biology III IB class requires them of me. I have resisted bitterly, and on occasion, I will still slip inches, feet, yards, and degrees Fahrenheit in. I have witnessed myself the resurgence of Imperial units, although I am only 17 years of age. I can tell you I have seen not one item in any supermarket, that is fully metric, and there are dwindling numbers of dual labels, most are going back to pure Imperial. I have recently written my Congressman, who is a Republican (the British equivalent would be a Conservative, I believe), and he was proud to respond that the Congress has been repealing portions of the Metric Conversion Act on 1975, and that those portions that were not repealed, are being ignored. Most government contracts, be it local, state, and federal, are now done in Imperial unites again. There has been a resurgence of Imperial only rulers. The movement is striking. For a system so easy (as claimed by its supporters), there is a huge amount of rejection. If you ever want examples for your people, you could always bring up the fact that Boeing, maker of advanced aerospace and avionics equipment (the 747, Delta rockets to name a few) designs and builds all aircraft in Imperial Units. Consider this also, the B2 Bomber (The Stealth), America’s pride and joy, was designed and is built in exclusively Imperial Units. I asked the Air Force what system they used, and he replied “the common system of measurements.” That sounded like metric to me (common internationally), so I pressed them on it, and he responded that by common, he meant the system that everybody uses commonly in America. That says volumes about how much of an impact metric has had on us. In closing, I would like you to know that if you need an "American Correspondent" who will keep you up to date on de-metrication of the US, I will be happy to do what I can. Strangely, I feel drawn to your fight in Britain, and I cannot explain why, perhaps it is ancestry, I don't know. Thanks for listening, and enlist me to fight in anyway you need.

Bill Roland

Bill,
Many thanks for the above. You are certainly welcome to keep BWMA updated on metric reversals and defeats in the USA.
The news you bring is critical because one of the chief deceptions of pro-metric British governments ever since the 1960s is to tell the British people that the USA is "going metric". This claim is used to pressure UK business into adopting metric.
Meanwhile, metric supporters in the USA tell a similar story - that Britain is already metric, therefore America must convert or be "alone" in the world.
It is essential that British, American and Canadian campaigners against compulsory metrication continue to exchange information to counter the metric lobby's propaganda.

Thanks

BWMA:
Thank you for the response. I am leading a so-called "rebellion" against metric in my school. Until recently, I too believed that everything in Britain was metric, so it was with some surprise I was reading a BBC article and it refered to the recent train wreck you all had, it rated the train at 90 MPH, which surprised me, and then listed all other measures in Imperial Units. I am pleased that Britain has not thrown away her heritage like a piece of garbage, althought many global conformist and metric lovers would do anything to see that happen there, and here in America as well, although they are fewer here. I will pressure Congress to repeal the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, and all it's secondary laws. If there is anything I can do in relation to your Parliament, please let me know. Thanks.
