1,000 metric signs removed

February 24 2002 at 9:03 AM
Active Resistance to Metrication

The Hastings raid on 23 February 2002 takes the number of recorded instances of metric signs having been either removed, amended, covered over or replaced - whether as a result of letters or other action - to exactly 1,000 with the amendment of a tourist sign in Hastings Old Town. The distance '150 mts' to the Museum was covered over with a black-and-white 5" x 2" plaque stating '150 yards'. Sources used to compile this list include back numbers of BWMA's 'The Yardstick.

This list no doubt excludes many unrecorded instances of demetrication and it also leaves out several dozen amendments to the heights of car parks and other miscellaneous metric amendments given in an appendix to the main list.

A continuously updated computer list of 'metric removals' is available from ARM Tel: 01480 435837.
