A1198 and Wimpole Hall

July 7 2002 at 9:44 PM

We've received the following reports:

1. Two road width signs, on the west side of the A1198 to Huntingdon about 5 miles north of Royston, illegally showing ' 2.0m ', professionally converted to read ' 6' 6" ' (digital photos of this 'Imperial conversion) will soon be available). The letters reading 2.0m were carefully removed first

2. Wimpole Hall's (NT - Cambridgeshire) direction sign reading 'Car Park - 25 metres' and 'Entrance to Hall - 400 metres' professionally changed to read ' 30 YDS ' and ' 1/4 mile ' respectively. We understand that the painting over of the illegal measures was carried out by a 70-year-old disabled fine art painter (female) who shares our concern to prevent our 'beautiful' measurements being replaced by 'ugly' ones. She's volunteered for further activity. An 80-plus year-old lady from Clacton-on-Sea who recently demetricated a sign in a local part is the oldest demetricator we've encountered so far.

The number of metric distances known by ARM to have been demetricated has now risen to 1,386. These illegal signs have been erecetd by 119 different authorities, transport companies or other organisations.
