You will be pleased to know that the warning signs "hump 25 metres" at Bournemouth International Airport have now been amended to read "hump 26 yds".

The new sign is illegal as it breaches condition (c) below.

Extract from Statutory Instrument 1994 No. 1519

<<
Numerals indicating distance may be varied with—
(a) distances of over 3 miles being expressed in miles to the nearest mile;
(b) distances of ½ mile or more but less than 3 miles being expressed to the nearest ¼ mile with the fractions ¾, ½ and ¼ being used; and
(c) distances of less than ½ mile being expressed in yards to the nearest 10 yards; "yards" or "YARDS" and the abbreviation "yds" may be used interchangeably.

Well done, Martin - you're finally learning - and getting the point.

I must say, however, that I've seen some very strange oddities before - two examples:

1) The use of 1000 yards - how cumbersome is that?

2) A sign I saw on a straight road saying "Traffic lights - 6 yards" (you'd have to see it to realise how ridiculous it looked!)

Illegal Imperial sign

September 20 2002, 3:42 PM

I think you are missing Martin's point Steve (pardon my intervention Martin).

BIA have replaced a non-compliant metric sign with a non-compliant imperial one. By ARM logic that means the replacement sign is just as illegal the original.

So are ARM going to correct it for them?

Thank you martin for your advice about the Statutory Instrument. I have written to the managing director of the airport to pass on your information.

Meaning you're asking them to put down *your* illegal sign ?
Which of course means you really don't give a %^$% about what's actually legal or not, you just enjoy walking around destroying things you don't like (understand).

The point Pip and Martin are making is that a 6 yard sign is as non-compliant as a 5 metre sign. AS Tallett has agreed with them.

Sounds like Ralf has been at the Bavarian booze again!

Calm down, mate! You're only talking about a country that you neither come from or live in!

P.S. All Germans are stupid, they voted for shroeder when they shouldn't have! The decision should be overturned and also they should illegalise "coalition forming" - it soooo corrupt, all that back scratching to get power!

Oops! Just turned into a "UKRalf" (sorrryyyyyy!)

BIA

I have now had a reply from the airport to tell me that they "are in the process of developing a completely new Master Plan for the Business Park over the next nine months. This will address all infrastructure issues, one of which will clearly be signage. Once we have determined an overall way forward, we will be reviewing all issues to do with signage which we believe to be a more appropriate course of action than further piecemeal activity".

Cearly, more procrastination!

However I think the main point is that the Airport are taking action and personally even if the replacement sign is illegal I prefer it to be in yards until such time as they complete their master plan.

I applaud your honesty mark.

Your remarks are better then trying to pretend that the "illegality" of metric signs motivate the BWMA/ARM campaign.

I visited Bournemouth International Airport today; the hump-warning signs still read "Hump 26 yds". I suppose the 9-month period has some time to go.
