Tonignt on Kitto Road, Lewisham, an ARM raid tried out a new method of obliterating illegal metric measurements on road signs - placing black sticky back plastic ('Fablon') over them.
The 'm' on two signs for humps, 35 metres and 300 metres away respectively, were covered over in seconds. The sticky back plastic then formed an excellent background for us to affix adhesive reflective white lettering proclaiming the ever-popular abbreviation 'yds'.
Much less messy than paint and adhesive.
The total number of road and pedestrian distances converted from metric to British distances and dimensions has now risen to 2,096
If I am in a car with one or more people and there is a sign with metres on it, i don't witness anyone glaring at it with anger, neither do they or I marvel at how marvellous a sign with metres is. Likewise, I see no one celebrating everytime we pass a miles/yards sign.

Just how popular is the yard?

Richard, didn't in my posting suggest that they were *that* popular

I never said you did. I am just saying that whether you do your work or not, people aren't bothered either way. Apart from your ARM, most people don't care if you change a sign back into mile and yards from metres. The reason being for metres is because the majority of people know that a metre is roughly a yard so it doesn't bother them.
