Now things are becoming stricter on these boards.......

Can I ask BWMA...

Am I allowed to mention sitings and locations of metric signs in this section?

Only I found a weird one recently - it had the 'road narrowing' graphic and '11m' written beneath.

Odd because in the UK 'm' would mean 'miles' and that's what the sign first looked like - only on slightly thinking about it I realised it meant the odd distance of 11 metres!

Come on, where is it, man!

Dear SteveH,

Yes, you are allowed to mention the location; that is simply information.

What the moderator was concerned about was anything that amounted to the active planning of any possible removal of or amendment of a illegal metric sign, in view of an element of doubt about whether or not such action was legal.

No doubt I'll be corrected if I'm wrong.

On the basis of the information you gave, the sign is clearly illegal, er (recalls martin), 'unlawful'.

We still have our proforma letter: 'Notification of an Illegal Metric Sign' which can be sent to you by e-mail if you prefer the route of asking the Council first to correct its illegal, whoops! unlawful sign.

Unless maybe it is a Highways Agency sign, in which case, write to them.

Our e-mail address is: ajsbennett@btinternet.com

Not according to the Units of Measurement Regulations which, according to Mr Justice Laws, take precedence over the TSRGD.

Doesn't sound like a metric sign to me. I would take that to mean road narrows 11 miles ahead, not road narrows to a width of 11 metres.

I wouldn't call an 11 metre wide road particularly narrow.

Steve,

Why don't you write to the local authority concerend and ask them what teh sign means. The "11m" could mean "11 metres ahead", "11 miles ahead", "for the next 11 metres" or "for the next 11 miles".

Four Meanings and A Sign

REPLY: Clearly a full written explanation will be necessary to accompany this sign, accompanied by a translation into Welsh if the sign is anywhere in Wales, Gaelic if in the Western Isles, Cornish if in Cornwall, Bengali if in Tower Hamlets and Urdu if in Bradford.

By the way, I prefer the last of martin's four possible interpretations

Not to mention a translation into metric for the 40-odd percent of us who are metric-educated ;-)

No, it showed a narrowing road ident with '11m' beneath.

That would normally mean '11 miles to go until this road you are on gets narrow'.

But physically looking at the road it actually got narrower after just 11 metres (12 yds).

And martin - get off the 'm' means metres hook - you know that 'm' means miles on our roads, whether you find it SI-lawful or not.

I'll post details of its whereabout in due course

11 mile "eleven metre" sign is in whitchurch, hampshire.

paste that into your browser.
it's on the left as you approach bell street on wells lane.

There's another one at Wellington Country Park near Reading, which are directions to the park.

And another outside this pub:

There seems to be a plague of them in that area (well, three).

Perhaps the pub serves litres only ;-)
