With regard to the refusal of some County Councils to comply with the law restricting the use of metric measurements on roadsigns, I would point out the possibility of suing the Council concerned. A court action can be taken, though probably only by a person who is a registered voter in the County in question, suing in a County Court for Judicial Review of an act of a public authority.
In an action for Judicial Review, the court has power to make an order of "mandamus" - an order requiring the Council to do something (for example, requiring it to put up a sign). It also has power to make an order of "certiorari" - an order requiring the Council to cease to do something (for example, requiring it to take down a sign). To make such an order, the court has to find that the Council has acted unreasonably - eg unlawfully. In a County Court case, use of a solicitor is not mandatory. |
