A report was received by UKIP in April from a Burnley couple who had seen a 'Danger - Men at Work - 100 metres' sign near the A577/A579 crossroads at Atherton, near Wigan, Lancashire.
It took many 'phone calls, chasing various staff of Wigan Council, to establish who was responsible - Transco McAlpine, who were laying a pipeline across Lancashire. Many more 'phone calls and threats of legal action were needed before there was any propsect of possible action. No-one could be bothered. When I eventually spoke to Transco's Project Manager at Atherton, Eric Holman, he told me the pipeline crossed 40 roads and there were 6 distance signs on each of them, making a potential total of 240 illegal metric signs. He said he'd "make enquiries about the cost".
I eventualy got the following two-sentence reply from Karen Rose, Director of Legal Services, Wigan Council, on 4 May 2001: "Thank you for your fax of 25 April 2001". I understand from speaking to Eric Holman at McAlpine-pps that the sign [sic] to which you refer has now been replaced".
I do not know about the other 239 and haven't had time to chase.
