The following is from my own observation and from a resident of Frinton-on-Sea who telephoned today:
1. Two signs to a Council car park, black on a white wooden sign, in metric: '50 metres'
2. Black-and-gold finger post signs (several) to toilets, the pier etc. in metres
3. Signs to promenade toilets (unusually frequent in Frinton-on-Sea - see note below) affixed to the promenade walls, all in metres or kilometers.
4. Signs to a new private housing estate in Clacton, 1.5km'
The informant wrote to Tendring District Council and received a reply saying that none of the signs were illegal. He asked _why_ metric signs rather than imperial were used but got no answer from the Council.
NOTE: The local doggerel runs:
"Harwich for the continent...
Frinton for the incontinent"
The informant has been advised of the work of 'metric sign improvement squads' and on that basis is willingly going to report on all the precise locations with a view to direct action being taken during the summer
