I believe the earth was re-created in preparation to support life for humans, that that re-creation was done in literal 24 hour days, so yes the earth existed before the recreation of the earth for humans, and the re-creation of earth to support the life for humans was done in 6 literal days and Yahweh is now resting from creating anything else. Why is it so hard to believe, is anything impossible for Yahwey? As for the whys and wherefores of how the earth became void and formless before the re-creation to support life for humans, there is some hints to that in the scriptures, humans and the animal life that now populates the earth was not the first and orginal animal life.
