I arrived in Manchester in late Sept 1974 to begin a post-graduate course. Thanks to a scare story in the "popular press" there had been a rush on sugar. This created a sugar shortage which was plugged by 1.5 kg packs of sucre, zuiker, zucker etc being offered to the publis. By the time sugar re-emerged on the shelves it was in 1.5 kg packs as well.
Most other goods were metricated in the next few years.
