Hi! We recently purhcased QB 2005 Premium. Looks like it will meed almost all of our needs, but we need to be able to track serial numbers for some of the products we sell. Can anyone recommend a good way of tracking this information?
Thanks!
(Sorry, tried searching for serial number(s) in the forum, but got mostly replies about the registration numbers needed to unlock the program!)
I know the last thing you want to do is spend more money - and I'm still using QB2003 Pro, so I'm not sure if what you are looking for is in the product you are using.
However, I can strongly recommend a third party product, "RegKeeper" from SiComponents.
You can download a trial from www.regkeeper.com
It's a fantastic product that lets you keep track of your software sales, it can also generate serial numbers for you (if it's your own software), using your own DLL's if necessary.
It can also automatically process emails, for instance, if you have orders coming in through the web - so you can easily fire off emails to customers with their order information, serial number, and even download information etc.
It's basically a glorified database, but with email facilities as well.
The author is very helpful, and is very receptive to new suggestions.
I use it for software we sell, and thanks to some minor additions I requested, the product is also able to be used with Rhinosoft's Serv-U FTP server - so I can add customers into the RegKeeper software, and as long as I fill the necessary fields in, they are allocated an account on our FTP server to download their product immediately.
The only thing I haven't been able to do is bolt it on to my Quickbooks / Clearly Bookkeeping, so I still have to have both running so I can create a Tax invoice in Quickbooks, and include the invoice number in the order details inside RegKeeper, ready for the email to shoot off to the customer.
Give that a try though, and if you decide to buy it, tell the author that Plexus Digital Solutions recommended you to it!
