FUTA 940EZ - error in "exempt payments" in QBPremier

I use QB Premier 2005, and it prepares 940 (FUTA) with a few thousand $$ in "exmpt payments" Line 2 on the return. The figure is about 3% of the total wage payments, and clearly erroneous. But it has no Breakdown of Exempt Payments" = that form is blank.
WHy is it doing this? How can I find what those figures represent?

In reading the help, it appears I have no items that are truly exempt.
I wouldn't even know how to set up a payroll item as exempt from FUTA.

If I override that to be zero, I owe hundreds of $$ .... feel like the figures in QB are not reliable.

Anyone had this experience?
Any tips on how to track this down and correct it?

Any help is greatly appreciated ....

WH
