Good point, David. The law is the law. I've played alot of cricket up here in Rochdale and the leagues are dominated by Asian teams (Indian, Pakistani, Bangledeshi) Believe me having been represented my team on the league committee we've forgotten more about 'racism' than most people know. There is a zero tolerance policy handed down by the games governing body (ECB) to all forms of abuse BUT the arbitors (Umpires, League) try to be pragmatic in the application. However, current PC awareness makes that all the more difficult as the following tale shows. An umpire standing there in person, knows the difference between two team mates laughingly trading what might be deemed racial insults and say a more agressive insult to a member of the opposition. However, in this case, two team mates have exchanged racial banter and a member of the crowd complained to the league resulting in a reprimand for the players and the umpire fot not reporting it.

The rule is in 2009, no matter what the moral arguments and where you stand on the intellectual high ground...if in doubt...keep yer trap shut.
