Karl...
You have come a long way and many people put in countless unpaid hours to achieve it. I'm not sure anyone is disputing that. Each club in its own way has allowed non-league football to flourish. If it's not back on the map nationally it certainly is regionally and in the town. There are fundamental differences in the way the clubs have got where they are principally on the funding side. I'm certain most will admit had the council not stepped in Linnets may still be playing at Witton or if in Runcorn certainly not with the enviable facilities you have now. However, they did and we are where we are. Town have gone about it in a different way. Whether by fundraising or donations from benefactors it's been done the hard way. It makes them proud of what they have but in a different way to the Linnets. Lets not forget that Mond started as a sunday league team and played second fiddle to Gen Chems at the Rec for many years. Both achievements are worth shouting about but for vastly different reasons. In season 2006-7 RL had nothing apart from a rag bag assortment of players, a tenancy at Witton and a shitload of commited individuals. The same season RT started 3 divisions below their current status. I'd say both sets of fans have reasons to be cheerful...wouldn't you? I'd like to see Runcorn derbies in the Evostik in the 2013-2014 season. | |
