Green light for stadium Feb 10 2005

COUNCIL chiefs are expected to give the green light to plans to build a new stand at Halton Stadium.

The plan to build a new all-seater stand at the east end of the ground will complete the development of the stadium which is home to both Widnes Vikings and Runcorn FC Halton.

On Monday, members of Halton Borough Council's development control committee are expected to give the thumbs-up to the scheme.

The work will be carried out by specialist builders Barr Construction. The firm is also working on stadium development at Premiership Portsmouth FC's Fratton Park ground and at Leyton Orient.

The East side of Halton Stadium is currently standing terraces only.

The new facility will be smaller than the existing stands at the stadium and will be specifically built so it does not block out the light to surrounding homes.

The council has only received one letter of objection from surrounding householders following meetings to put their minds at rest.

A council spokesman said: 'It is not considered that the proposal will significantly impact on the amenity of neighbours to the rear by virtue of either loss of light or due to its appearance.

'In practice, it is felt that the proposed structure offers a far better and much-improved eastern boundary to the site.'
