Ken McKenna Managerial Appointment at Lairds 03/05/2008

Cammell Laird have announced the appointment of ex Tranmere Rovers man Ken McKenna as their new First Team Manager. McKenna will be assisted by current first team coach Neil Young. McKenna replaces outgoing Manager Ian Doran who has been appointed to the Birkenhead clubs board of directors. Doran has spearheaded Lairds amazing rise up the Non League pyramid which has seen Lairds achieve four promotions in five years, moving from the West Cheshire League to the UniBond Premier League in that time.
In a statement, Lairds Chairman John Lynch said "We are absolutely delighted to have appointed Ken. To attract someone like him to be our new manager shows the ambition we have here to progress to the next level. I am also delighted that Neil Young has stayed on as assistant manager as he played an integral part in our promotion last season. Neil has previous experience as Assistant Manager at Rhyl FC and was successful there before joining us last season while Ken has played, coached and managed at the highest level with TNS, including the European Champions League game against Liverpool. I amm sure both Ken and Neil will ensure that we will again be challenging for honours next season and beyond."

How is it a missed opportunity? Would we have started getting an extra 200-300 people a week with Mckenna in charge?

Spike was a much bigger Runcorn legend than Ken Mckenna ( probably in the top 3 all time Runcorn legends ), did we suddenly get a huge increase in profile and attendances when Spike took over as manager?

No we didnt, nor would we have if Mckenna took over.

Also, we could never afford his wages and expected playing budget at this time in our clubs existence.

Ive heard Sven Goran Ericcsson will be leaving Man City soon, it would be a missed opportunity if we didnt get him in charge.

McKenna is a bigger name than the bloke they have in charge now.
He is a name associated with Runcorn and with doing a decent job at TNS.
The current crowd average is pretty poor and Im sure McKenna would add a bit more interest to the club. in the same way that appointing Carter as boss would do now. Carters appointment at Runcorn was in a period of decline and uncertainty.
I am also sure he would bring more ambition than the current manager, who only seems to ever respond once he reads a bit of fans criticism on the official site or hears a few disgruntked voices on the terraces.
Infact, I dont read or see anything that suggests that the new manager has brought anything better or progressed the team any further than what Steve Carragher was doing. A manager who basically allowed players to play out the end of season to a canter.

How do you know what McKennas budget and expected wages would be?
Rumour has it that Runcorn linnets is amongst the top spending clubs in the league, yet results and performances dont seem to indicate that.

The results next season need to be there from the off and the promotion challenge has to be there for all to see. Another season such as this and I dont see much future for the club.
