I liked this presentation because it allows for the way people actually read and gather information on the web. Instead of simply presenting static linear texts on the web, we need plan structures and rules for the presentation of information. Doing so gives readers the tools for building a strategy for reading it.
Amazon's "People who bought x also bought y" can be seen as a rule or formula for presenting content in a module on a page; the page is built out of a number of modules (surveys, popularity rankings, interactions). As long as the rules are defined well, the page becomes a sort of self-organizing entity that affords the five web goals Ellen outlines: share, interact, inform, entertain, create. |
