In September 2000, the British government witnessed an uprising by the people over the extortionately high levels of duty applied to a litre of fuel.  We have seen this government reduce duty by up to three pence a litre, which is a meaningless reduction.

Fuel is now tipped to reach £4.00 per gallon by the middle of summer, which is nothing short of a rip off when considering the costs in other parts of Europe.  Fishing, farming, tourism and transport, to name but a few industries that are facing a beleaguered future cannot absorb any further increases and are finding it increasingly difficult to stay in business.  SME’s across Scotland, especially in the rural areas, are in difficulty, having to deal with ever increasing costs and the time has come for the present Government to own up to where the money has gone.

In under two weeks time, from the 8^th May to the 11^th May, there will be peaceful and lawful demonstrations at the main refineries and fuel depots, and go-slow convoys on all the motorways and trunk roads throughout Scotland.

Our position is that we have no choice. We have not been listened to and we have to make sure that the government are aware the problem has not gone away.
