Threshold is the audible level; that is the point or cut-off at which you can hear the ongoing search signal. The threshold is usually operated at a point where you can just hear the ongoing/constant search signal.Turn the threshold down too far and you won't hear anything.
The tone is the type of sound you can hear after you've adjusted the threshold and this can be adjusted to your personal taste or "ear". Whether you prefer a constant slightly higher pitch or a lower pitch depends on you. My advice is to go low Joe.Hope this clears it up.
