The "1st" wristwatch and Santos-Dumont

by C.W. Cale

The Sept/Oct issue of InSync had a great article on Cartier and the Santos watch which is still a beautiful watch (which I will never be able to afford!)

It also had a wonderful article investigating who actually made the first wristwatch. The article chronicled the early efforts at converting pocket watches and showed pictures of many of the old "converters" which were essentially small cages worn on wriststraps which held the pocketwatch inside. Before reading it I'd never thought about how and why the pocket watch gave way to the wristwatch. The article was interesting although inconclusive as I suppose the answer to that question always will be; "It all depends!"

Sadly InSync only covers the extreme high end of watches (although they DID include an article about Fossil!) and they seldom mention Timex! Hmmmph!
