Bioterror or biofizzle?

September 24 2001, 3:27 AM

The biologist seems well-qualified, but I would like to more about his background.

It seems to be a reasonable precaution to watch the crop dusters, the terrorists may be planning to use something other than anthrax.

I've heard botulism is water-carried disease, the biologist seems to know his stuff on that.

As for smallpox, that one's scary, I think it's airborne, but I'm not sure. A few years ago there was a controversy about destroying the last smallpox virus. They decided not to destroy it. Well they can destroy the smallpox, but for heaven sake don't destroy cowpox because they'll need it to make more smallpox vaccine just in case smallpox comes back.

Anthrax: It's real

September 24 2001, 7:06 AM

Iraq has lots of anthrax spores ready for use. If they have it other nations will have it, too.

TREATMENT: (skin)
Immobilize the infected part.
Absolute bed rest.
DO NOT TRY TO "DRAIN" ANY OF THE INFECTIONS.

Medications normally used:

ADULT- Oral dosages taken for ten days-

Doxycycline - 100mg twice a day
Tetracycline - 500mg four times a day
Oxytetracycline - 500mg four times a day
Penicillin V-K - 250mg six times a day
Ciprofloxacin - 500mg twice a day

CHILD - Oral dosages taken for 10 days-
see:
Clark's rule
Young's rule
Cowling's rule

Humans under 19 years should not take cipro
Expectant mothers should not take cipro

PULMONARY - requires hospitalization, isolation and I.V. antibiotics.

NOTE: Mass Casualty Patients with Pulmonary Anthrax are
going to die, treatment or not. If you use up your
antibiotics on terminal patients, there will be none
left for minor infections.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "fair use" doctrine allows limited reproduction of copyrighted works for educational and research purposes. The relevant portion of the copyright statue provides that the "fair use" of a copyrighted work, including reproduction "for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research" is not an infringement of copyright. The law lists the following factors as the ones to be evaluated in determining whether a particular use of a copyrighted work is a permitted "fair use," rather than an infringement of the copyright:
• the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
• the nature of the copyrighted work; • the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, and
• the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
Although all of these factors will be considered, the last factor is the most important in determining whether a particular use is "fair." Where a work is available for purchase or license from the copyright owner in the medium or format desired, copying of all or a significant portion of the work in lieu of purchasing or licensing a sufficient number of "authorized" copies would be presumptively unfair. Where only a small portion of a work is to be copied and the work would not be used if purchase or licensing of a sufficient number of authorized copies were required, the intended use is more likely to be found to be fair.
