SUSAN- - - - I found the pamphlet!!!!

by

Hi, I found the handbook I was given prior to my tubal. It's 12 pages long, and is provided by the California State Health Department. I received the third edition, which was ,get this....printed in 1983. Yes, '83!!!! I guess nothing has changed in medicine since then....
It basically discusses the different procedures, anesthesias, effectiveness, birth control options, and some side effects.

On page 4, in a section called "How will sterilization change a woman's body?" it states: The uterus, ovaries, and hormones will remain the same as before the operation. A woman will still have her monthly period.

On page 11, in a section titled "What kinds of health problems can occur with these operations?" it states:
Minor problems (discomforts) are common after an operation, but usually go away in a few days without any treatment. Some possible discomforts are:
*soreness where the cut was made
*mild cramps
*pelvic soreness
*changes in menstrual periods, which are not harmful, but may last awhile
*Nausea or vomiting (from the anesthesia)
*sore shoulders and neck (with laparoscopy)

Some of the possible serious health problems due to a sterilization operation are:
*bleeding
*fever and infection
*injury to the intestines and bladder
*heart and breathing problems (with laparoscopy)
*accidental burning (with hot cautery)
*painful sexual intercourse (with vaginal sterilization)

You (or anyone) can get a copy by writing to:
California State Department of Health Services
Office of Family Planning
714 P Street
Sacramento, CA
95814
(916) 322-4710

Not much about the long-term effects, right???
I also found the actual consent I signed prior to my surgery.
Carrie
PS. Sorry this is sooooo long! :)

Take the Tubal Ligation I.Q. Test Are you outraged? Feel as though you and other women were not (are not) being informed? Think that a class action lawsuit should be filed on behalf of post tubal women because information was and still is being withheld by the ACOG! The CPTwomen invites all reading this forum to join the CPTwomen and communicate with us at the members' forum. All posting here and conversation here has been moved to the members' forum.

CPTwomen members have testified in front of the IL and CA Court, the IL Gov. Task Force, the Sunset Review Committee, (Senator Liz Figueroa), NOW, and more. What occurred has been made a matter of public record. The CPTwomen are making public the issues which millions of other women have faced in silence. Issues such as women are not informed at the time of their tubal ligation that there is a risk of hormonal imbalance occurring. For the CPTwomen to continue its mission to move this issue to the forefront of government, we must ask for a small contribution/subscription fee from all those who wish to communicate with us and participate at the Coalition's Bulletin Board
