I find that bizarre as well. They are mostly ice fishers. People in snowmobiles do it to, and every year someone dies because of it. I'm afraid of even going over a lake on skis.
The ski championships are in the news every day here, as we have quite a few skiers. People here pay more attention to winter sports than to summer sports.
