Hi again!!

May 10 2007, 5:29 PM

I've been meaning to post, but things have been busy.

Spring has sprung. The weather is nice.

I have sent of my husband's process and received confirmation of my approval as a sponsor. Now the process is being sent to the visa office in the US for his end of the process. That could take anywhere between 3 and 13 months.

I have also started a course on Income Tax that will last 8 weeks. It's pretty interesting, but tiring.

How about you?

Well...

May 10 2007, 6:43 PM

...I have a lot of work to do for the university. I was programming on Wednesday together with some very experienced programmers, one even has his own business. That was very exciting.

I am also very excited about Lost. Yesterday a new episode came out. And there are only two episodes left this season. By the way, the character of the Brazilian actor (who was also in the movie 300) got killed on the show. I think they did it because the fans meant that there are far to many characters. But I liked him. I especially liked his line where he comes out of the bathroom and says: "The toilettes do works".

Last Saturday I have created my own private wiki where I share with collegues from the university some programming stuff. It's fun to see how all comes together in bits and pieces.

And I hope to paint a bit soon but I was so focused on programming stuff the last weeks that I almost forgot painting.

Oh and today I have learnt to create transparent png images. Very easy if you know how to do it.

Cool.

I want to learn some programing too.
I will do that when I'm done with the accounting course.

Then I'll ask my husband to help me with homework.

And then we'll write accounting and taxation programs.

In the meantime, I'm going to try out Linux.

I'm going to run Ubuntu and Kubuntu from LiveCD to see how that works.

I have Ubuntu too!

May 13 2007, 12:27 AM

We needed for one of our university classes Linux and so I bought an external hard drive to install Ubuntu because I was too anxious to divide my current hard drive. It works just fine but I still have to learn more about it. I also bought a book about Ubuntu.

Two things I have found out that can be a bit of a draw back when you use Ubuntu are that my USB mouse and keyboard don't work on Ubuntu. I had to buy an adapter for my mouse and everytime I use Ubuntu I have to use my old keyboard. But I hope to solve this soon with some drivers or something like that. I hadn't time to fix that yet.

If you plan to learn programming I can recommend Java and you should use Eclipse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_%28software%29) which is a open source high quality development tool. It is almost intelligent because it recognizes many of the mistakes you make and tells you then how to make it right. You even don't have to install it you just have to download the programm and start it right out of its folder. You can even use it on an USB flash drive!

Cool!!

I have a USB keyboard, and it works as a basic keyboard. I didn't try any of the special keys and such, because most of them are set for Windows Programs anyway. But I will try it next time.

Ubuntu was the one that worked best, with Kubuntu and Xubuntu coming close behind. I tried running Knoppix and Gentoo from LiveCD too, but they didn't like my video card and wouldn't finish booting.

So I think I'm going to install Ubuntu on my secondary Drive soon. I'm just downloading FreeSpire in the meantime to see how it goes.

I like Ubuntu...

May 14 2007, 3:10 AM

...cause you get a new perspective when you use your computer. It doesn't always have to be Windows. On the other hand windows isn't that bad as many people say. I think many people don'z like windows because they think it's cool. Sounds stupid but I guess it really is so.

Have you ever worked with a Mac? Here are they are rare but I have seen a few from time to time. They look good too.

I've seen a Mac

But never actually worked on one.

They are said to be very cool. My boss' husband just got one and even my boss was impressed with it.

I think one of the problems with Windows is the fact that the EULA is getting more and more restrictive, limiting what people can do with it.

I think if Microsoft could get away with it, they would just rent us the OS instead of selling it.

Also security is an issue. And since it is not open source, you depend on Microsoft to fix all their security problems.

I'll see how I like Ubuntu. I should be installing it some time this week.
