... it would seem like the obvious thing to happen, but I remember how he seemed to break out as a true superstar after the pressure of being captain was taken away from him.
Anyway, that's probably the least significant part of the whole rumor. I believe both of these are quite possible. Montreal has been salivating at getting Vinnie since forever. Tanguay would also give that franco-feel to the front end of the roster, something that is badly missed by even the anglo Habs fans. But we've been hearing stuff like this from Montreal for a long time and it never materializes. Maybe the combo of Gainey / Carbonneau will change that.
I'm a huge fan of Saku Koivu, but he's a tough guy to fit into a lineup if you're trying to become a championship team. He's good, but he's not someone I can ever see winning a Conn Smythe trophy. Yet, he's taking up salary space that makes it hard for the Habs to have that Conn Smythe type of player. So three things will happen: everything will stay the same; Saku will take a pay cut and Montreal will upgrade in the UFA market; they use Saku as trade bait to get that big gun.
On the Tampa side, I've been in the camp all along that thinks its ridiculous for them to be holding on to their big 3. One has to go. The franchise, despite winning a Cup only 3 years ago, can't be making money much longer under their current situation. But it's a tough decision for them to make. Trade Vinnie or trade Richards? Vinnie's value is way higher right now, but I still believe Richards is a top player in this league. So do you sell your floundering star at a discount or do you get top dollar for your Hart candidate and hope the flounderer finds his form? Would saying goodbye to Lecavalier spell the end of hockey's semi-popularity in Tampa?
Here is a rumor I'll start. Yes I spent way too much time looking at this:
To Toronto: Brad Richards
To Montreal: Vincent Lecavalier
To Tampa: Saku Koivu, Michael Ryder, Kyle Chipchura, Alex Tanguay
To Calgary: Mats Sundin, Ponikerovski
There will also be prospects / draft picks thrown around. Calgary will get a pick/prospect from Toronto; Tampa will get a 1st rounder from Montreal.
