Raffi Torres is still a very useful player
by Big Dan
He just seems to be way too hard on himself.
When he was injured, his stats were a sorry 32-5-6-11 despite playing on lines with Horcoff/Hemsky, Gagner/Penner, Stoll/Nilsson, ...
What is deceiving is that he led the team in shots during that time. He just seemed to lose all confidence on offense.
But you could tell he was trying. Pressing, really. He was just in a slump.
I personally think he is best as a third line banger/ agitator/ defensive presence. He was DYNAMITE at that in the 2006 playoffs with Peca/Pisani.
The Oilers were trying to make him into a scorer after popping 20 goals a couple times. When a team picks him up this summer and utilizes him properly, he'll be a heck of a player.
I still see a long, useful career out of him in the mold of Mike Grier.
