That means your management is inept and now they have to bottom out and build from scratch. Some rebuilds take a year - aka Dale Tallon. Some take YEARS, Oilers' has lasted 20-some years.
Most of the time, the management team rebuilding is picking up the pieces from a group that was fired. Unless you're the Oilers; the same people who necessitated the "rebuild" are the same ones that are supposed to know how to clean it up.
Detroit does not have an inept management team. Nor do I expect them to bottom out. But they have went from perrenial Cup contender to the 2nd tier. The ones who stay in the playoff race and hope to hit lightning in a bottle.
Until Datsyuk and Zetterberg get old, you'll be in that tier for a while.
I laughed at the media reports that Holland has lost his touch because he wouldn't overpay Ryan Suter by $2M/year or overcome the fact Parise got married in Minnesota. The Wings will be fine - just need to lower the expectations a little.
Holland will sign some vets to bargain deals at the end of the summer - like a Scott Hannan. You'd think the rest of the NHL would figure out to wait like he does.
