My soon-to-be 8-year old is in her Black Beauty stage and has a b'day party coming up in two days. Any ideas on how to incorporate a horse theme w/out horses?
All help appreciated!

You could always set up a wooden saw horse and put a saddle on it so the boys could ride the pretend one. I know 8 year olds will have alot of energy. Then you could have a gold hunt, like a scavenger hunt, except buy little gold candies and hide them(outside).
Hope that helps.

My daughter turned four last year so these might be a bit "young" for an 8 year old, but what I did was got a few "stick horses" and they had a "stick horse rodeo"...barrel racing, calf roping, etc. All from a stick horse. You can also get a few stick horses and divide the girls into teams and make "costumes" for their steeds and have a "parade" afterwards. You can use Tinfoil, ribbon, jewels, etc to decorate the horses and have them judged to win prizes *most creative, most beautiful, etc*
For Barrel Racing *which expends a LOT of energy out of them!* fill three white kitchen garbage bags with newspaper. Place them in a "triangle" about ten feet from each 'barrel' It should look like this when finished

* <<Rider starts here
Then each rider circles the barrels like this...
Go to the RIGHT barrel and circle...run to the LEFT barrel and circle and then up to the TOP barrel, cirlce and run for home. Race for time.
Using the saw horse idea, rope *use a jump rope* the saw horse by placing a Cut out of a Steer on the front *you can also get a plastic 'cutout' at Wishing Well*
I also did the "Gold Hunt" by filling a kiddie pool full of sand and hiding goodies and money and they each got a few turns to "sift" thru the sand and find their gold.
