I am in the process of planning my 11 year old's LOTR party.
After correctly decoding an easy Elvish message, each guest will be admitted to the Fellowship and given a random certificate with their new LOTR-ish name (I'll make them up except for one -Frodo) and a cape (just made from some cheap rough fabric) and a sword (I will buy cheap toy swords or make them out of cardboard covered with tin foil). They will be issued with a map and will go on a ring hunt.
I am making Hobbit feet out of stuffed kitchen rubber gloves. The kids will put these on their feet and run Hobbit races. They will also crouch like Gollum and run a race thay way too and they'll be throwing rings into the fires of Mount Doom (not sure how I'm gonna make Mount Doom yet!)The lucky kid with Frodo's name will hide. The others will then set out in different directions to find him and as each child finds him, they too will hide with him until none are left.
Prizes will include Runes (stones with an Elvish letter drawn on them), store-bought LOTR trinkets and some booby prizes like a stem of Broccoli, a tin of fish and other yukky stuff.
Food will include 'mushrooms' made of chocolate, 'Burger Rings' or 'Cheezels' (rings), donuts (rings!) Elven looking bread, cheese and other LOTR food. Of course there'll be Ale (ginger ale) and root beer.
Well, I'm exhausted already just thinking about it!
Hope this helps.
Cat.

There's quite a bit out there if you search the internet...

dressing up

theme food (hard to do accurately)

"make your favorite scene from LOR out of play-dough" contest

making "theme rooms" out of your house (one for The Shire, one for Moria, one for Mordor, etc...)

make a huge maze out of cardboard boxes and put a sign on the entrance that says "The Mines of Moria" and have everyone crawl through it - what you put in there for people to "encounter" is up to you (I don't have any ideas on that yet)

Anyway, I am trying to set something up for December 2003 in anticipation of Return of the King...

Good luck...
