ok first the ivitations: Purchase tan or yellowish colored parchment paper at an office supply store. Or, you may even be able to find computer paper that has a scroll design on it. Write your invitation in Gothic or archaic-type penmanship, or use a print style on your computer that is similar. Hand deliver your invitations by rolling up and securing with a piece of ribbon, or place in a yellow envelope and write with green ink to mail.

For decorations:Hang scarlet and gold, or red and yellow balloons and crepe paper from the mailbox, front porch and in the party area.


Make a cardboard "shield" with a lion emblem on it and hang it on the front door (the lion is the symbol for Gryffindor).


Prop a broomstick near the front door.


Place a black cauldron near the front door with candy in it to give to arriving guests.


Hang pictures of trolls, gnomes, owls, cats, toads, mice, ghosts, dragons, unicorns, castles, etc.

Hang paper or plastic bats (leftover from Halloween) from the entranceway to your porch or from the ceiling in the party area.


Suspend a stuffed owl from the ceiling and attach a rolled up letter to its feet.


Hang white Christmas lights from the ceiling in the party area and dim the lights.


If you have a basement, put a sign on the door to the basement that reads, "Dungeon."


If you have a wooded area in your yard, place a sign near it that reads, "Forbidden Forest."


Put a sign in the kitchen or above a doorway that reads, "Great Hall."


Cover a large book with a paper cover that reads, "Magic Spells." Place the book on a coffee table or on the party table.


Place plastic toy animals, such as snakes, in jars of water to represent pickled animals.


Use a red tablecloth and gold or yellow colored paper plates, cups and napkins. You can also use goblets or teacups for the drinks.


For a bubbling cauldron table centerpiece, place a block of dried ice in a cauldron and pour water over it. The dried ice will create a spooky smoking effect. Dry ice can be purchased at welding shops, or look under "Ice" in the yellow pages of the phone book. CAUTION: Dry ice can be dangerous! Its very low temperature can burn the skin, so you must be very careful not to touch it.

Magic Password
As guests arrive, ask them the magic password upon entering. If they guess "Wattlebird" or "Caput Draconis" or any of the other passwords in the Harry Potter books, award them a piece of "wizard" candy from a cauldron near the front door. If they cannot guess the magic passwords, give them a piece of "Muggle" candy.

Make-up
Place temporary tattoos in the shape of lightening bolts on the guests' foreheads, or draw them on with red lipstick.

Drinks
• Goblets of soda or juice, or teacups of hot tea served from a teapot

• Wizard Punch
Float a plastic plate in a bowl of your favorite punch and place a paper cone of the same color on top to resemble a wizard hat. If desired, decorate the cone with yellow crescent moon and star shapes in a contrasting color.

• Spider Cider Punch
Fill a punch bowl with spiced apple cider. Float a yellow plastic plate on the punch and place a plastic toy spider on top of the plastic plate.

Ingredients:
• One box of cake mix, plus ingredients as box directs
• Two 16-oz cans of white frosting
• Yellow and green food coloring

Directions:


Bake the cake in a 9x13-inch pan according to directions and cool.

Cut the cake as illustration shows by first cutting a line down the center of the cake. This cut should be 2/3 of the way through the cake, not completely through the cake.

About 2-inches from the center cut, cut a diagonal line inward toward the center. Or, cut on a slight curve as the cake in the illustration shows.

Cut the outside edges of the cake at a 45-degree angle forming the slant of the pages.

Freeze the cake uncovered for about an hour to make the frosting spread on easier.
Color 3/4 of the frosting yellow and 1/4 of the frosting green.


Remove the cake from the freezer and frost the "pages" yellow. To give the appearance of pages, pull a cake decorator's comb across the outer edges of the cake. (You can substitute a fork for a cake decorator's comb.)

Put the green frosting in a cake decorator's bag fitted with a No. 104 tip or a rose tip, and frost a bookmark along the center of the cake. Change the tip to a No. 1 tip and add fringes to the bookmark.

On the left page, use green frosting to write "Chapter 13 Birthday Spells and Potions." The chapter number could refer to the age you are turning this birthday. On the right page, write "Happy Birthday" and your name.

Hogwarts Sorting Hat

Before playing any group games, you will need to sort the players into two different teams. Make a list of who will go on which team before the party. During the party, seat a cone-shaped pointed wizard hat on a stool or chair. (Wizard hats can be purchased at a party supply store or made of construction paper.) As you call out each guest's name, have him take a turn at sitting on the stool or chair and having the wizard hat placed on his head. As in the Harry Potter stories, whisper in each guest's ear which team she has been chosen to be on. One team could be Gryffindor and the other could be Ravenclaw.

As at Hogwarts, award "house points" to teams when playing games.

Broomstick Relay Race

You will need:


Two long-handled brooms with the name "Nimbus Two Thousand" written on the broomsticks

Four markers, such as athletic field cones

A whistle


What to do:


Line the players up in two equal rows, with each team behind a marker or cone.

Place another marker or cone about 20 feet away as a goal (one goal per team).

Hand the first player in each line a broom. Have them place the brooms between their legs as if they are going to ride the brooms like witches.

At the blow of the whistle, the first player in each line must quickly walk with the broom between his legs to his teams goal, and then turn around and come back.

They then pass the brooms off to the next team members in line, who then does the same as the first players. This continues until one team has all of its member's finish first. They are declared the winning team.


Variation:
Play this game with balloons, and instead of having the players ride the brooms, have them sweep the balloons into a box or laundry basket which represents the goal. Give each player a balloon to sweep with, and have a few extra balloons to pass to players whose balloons should happen to pop.

Search for the Sorcerer's Stone. Hide a special stone near a picture of a three-headed dog. Remind the guests that in the story HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, a three-headed dog guarded a magical stone. The stone was said to have been able to transform any metal into gold making the finder very wealthy. The stone also produced the "Elixir of Life," which made the drinker immortal. Divide the players into two teams and award prizes to the team who finds the stone.

Dizzy Gnome Game

In the book HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, Harry and the Weasleys must rid the garden of pesky gnomes. They de-gnome the garden by swinging the gnomes in the air and tossing them so that they become disoriented and can't find their way back to their gnomeholes.

You will need:


A stuffed or plastic doll that resembles a gnome

A target, such as a tree stump or the center of a hanging hula-hoop


What to do:


Have the players stand single file behind a marked throwing line.

Give each a turn at throwing the doll lasso-style at the target. The player to get the doll closest to the target or through the target wins.

Bean Guessing Contest

In the Harry Potter books, Hogwarts students enjoy eating Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans-- jellybeans that came in all sorts of interesting and unusual flavors. Some taste like candy, while others taste like vegetables, meat, spices, etc.!

You will need


A jar

A felt-tip marker

Jellybeans, such as Jelly Belly® jellybeans

Paper

An adhesive label, such as a binder label (found at office supply stores)

Tape

Pencils, 1 per guest


What to do:


Before the party, write "Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans" on the label and attach it to the candy jar.

Fill the jar with the jellybeans, and count the beans as you place them in the jar.

Write the number of beans on a small piece of paper. Fold up the paper so that it cannot be read and tape it to the bottom of the jar.

During the party, pass out a piece of paper and a pencil to each guest and ask them to write down their name and the number of beans that they guess is in the jar. The guest to guess the closest wins the entire jar of beans
