Re: kicks

June 23 2004, 9:14 PM

I find that todo that kick correctly requires atleast a medium amount of flexibility to high flexibility. I can easily kick anyone in the head up to 6 feet 5 inches with that kick(not that I would in a real fight).

Only thing I can say, is practice, practice, practice. Over time it will get stronger, faster, higher and you'll be more balanced and in control.

As for training balance.. the only thing I do is I hold different kicks out in their out-stretched positions for an extended amount of time. sometimes while standing on a brick(with the small side down, and only the ball of the foot on the brick, not the wide side down where you can get your whole foot on it, might as well be on the ground if you do that).

Air kicks

June 25 2004, 4:10 AM

As Bruce said, kicking without resistance is bad for your knees.
Try kicking on the bag

bag kicking

June 27 2004, 6:54 AM

yeah but when you kick the bag the bag dosent kick back so you get used to just kicking in the same situation .. i cant spar with nothing fighting me like bruce used to practise so how can i do it i dont have a partner and will never get one in australia.. so how can i create a fight and let the moves flow without thinking ...
and i will never be able to be in a fight and not think because i cant trust that my limbs will work proberally no matter how much practise i do ...
how do you know when your body understands when and where (i know confusing but bare with me)
i hope you get it its hard to explain

Problem

June 27 2004, 11:56 AM

I have the same problem, but to make them still very usefull, you have to imagine the situation. If you do punching combinations, you must have always one hand that covers your face (and an elbow covering the stomach). You have to lock your eyes on the bag, take care that you have the reflex to hold a hand for cover and always switch them when using the other hand, and finish the combination by backing off and staying covered.

When kicking, it matters the same thing, but one hand must be face/stomach cover and the other cover against counter-kicks.

Please correct me if i'm wrong Sifu, this is just how i do it when training on the bag.

stuck

June 27 2004, 7:30 PM

but dont you get stuck for ideas????
i mean it is hard to imagine a fight in your head then try and respond when the fight is not actually happening!!!!

when i go at the bag i usually just punch as you know kicking feels weird lol
my strongest kick would be side as i can get a hell of alot of power behing it.. i am also fairly flexy so roundhouse is cool..

so for jkd is there special names for punches and kicks if soo share with me the finer points on this subject

Hmm

June 28 2004, 3:44 AM

What is a roundhouse kick?
In Art of Expressing the Human Body, there's a lot of kick names... Do you mean maybe the hook kick (check it out!)

And no, i don't get stuck on that.
With imagining a fight, you are sparring with sparpartner ^^. You don't always have to spar. Punching a lot can make any punch you make harder en faster, as it trains your muscels too. Try to do 100 left punches, 100 right punches. Then another 100 with an other kind of punch on both sides. And then use them both in a combination and do 100 each again. You will feel it!
Bruce used even weighted punches. He madea pyramid system to do it: 100 punches, then 100 punches with 1 pound, then 100 with 2 pound, so on until 7 pounds, and then to drop to 6 pounds, 5 pounds until 100 with 0 pounds again. That way, he did 1300 punches each side!
So you won't get bored in imagining if you don't do it every time.

Two versions of this kick

July 4 2004, 8:54 PM

Remember there are two versions of this kick. There's the "sweeping" version that connects with the heal or bottom of the foot and the "cresent" version that connects with the side of the foot. Personally I find the cresent version easier to pull off, especially in a sparring situation. Give it a shot.

John M. Drake

Inverted hook kick

July 6 2004, 4:25 PM

The inverted hook kick uses the top of the foot as does the "normal" hook kick. The typical target for the inverted hook kick (as I was taught it) is the groin of someone in an opposite lead. If that's the target then it doesn't require much flexibility. I have seen a TKD practictioner demonstrate a similair kick to the head in a magazine though.

Footwork drills without a partner? Shadow boxing perhaps?

John M. Drake

John...?

July 6 2004, 1:50 PM

I might be wrong, but when I read dani's initial post, I thought the described motion sounded more like the 'inverted hook kick'....

Reverse versus inverted hook kick

July 6 2004, 4:20 PM

Hmm...you may be right. Especially since Dani talked about the "top of the foot" in the last post. The first post used the word "reverse" which made me think "reverse hook kick".

John M. Drake

Re: Reverse versus inverted hook kick

July 7 2004, 11:44 AM

When 'balance' was mentioned as the problem, I immediately recalled the balance problems I was having when I was initially learning the inverted hook kick. I wish I had a solution, but it seems to me I just threw hundreds and hundreds of kicks from both sides under the guidance of my teacher, and eventually it all fell into place.
