Re: punching

That's a very broad question. It can easily be an entire article (or book). I can list the punches/hand techniques as I know them.

* Lead jab - probe defenses, setup
* Lead straight punch - power punch, knockout potential
* Rear cross - power punch with rear hand
* Lead straight to body - basic body blow
* Lead straight to body with half knuckle fist - seperate ribs
* Hook punch - get around defenses and/or part of combo
* Uppercut - same. (Saw Tarver use this to get around Roy Jones guard in their first fight)
* Shovel hook - Inverted body punch
* Palm smash - "Pimp slap" but far more devistating
* Finger jab - Disrupt vision
* Finger spear - Disrupt breathing (or other things)
* Cutting palm - Disrupt blood flow
* Straight blast - Disrupt consciousness.
* Power blast - Straightblast variation. More powerful punches but less centerline control. (At least that's my understanding)

That's off the top of my head. (I may have likely missed something.) Are there any on the list that you aren't familair with? Oh, and I'm not at all posting this as the "final authority". These are just my ideas.

Regards,

John M. Drake

It's not as difficult as it sounds....

Hello Dani,

You asked for "everything" so I threw it all out at once. But there are a few things to consider.

First there aren't that many different hand positions. You have a basic closed fist that can be thrown vertically or horizontally depending on what you're doing. (Clench fist is also used for "backfist" and "hammerfist" but I forgot those two yesterday). You have the "finger jab" which can either be fingers spread apart in a "fan" for striking the eyes or together in a "spear" for jabbing the throat or a single eye. You have palm strikes and ridgehand strikes.

Second while there are a lot of "options" its best to concentrate on a "few". In JKD you're far more likely to use a straight lead, jab, cross or hook punch than any other hand strike. Or rather I should say that I AM more likely to use those hand strikes. Somebody else may have another set of perferred strikes. Get good with a few basic ones, then work the others in as you go along.

Third as you learn different hand techniques you're realize that many of them have similairities and can be thought of in "groups". For instance "curved line" versus "straight line". Or "lead hand" versus "rear hand". Take the jab punch and the finger jab. The mechanics of both strikes are very similair, but one is done with a close fist and the other is done with the finger tips.

Probably the best way to go forward is to pick a few that you'd like to start with and ask questions about them.

Regards,

John M. Drake

Books

As you have a few books, there are often some pictures of moves in those, i have seen some. They should give you an idea of the punches
And moves like the stop kick, outside crescent kick, reverse hook kick, etc.. are in there too.
