Hi Dani!
Here are some answers for you.
1: In doing hook kick is the snap generated from the flick of the knee?
The power comes mostly from a whipping action of the waist and hips. In other words, TORQUE! There is some snap from the knee as well, but be sure not to hyperextend your leg at the knee joint.
2: Quick advance hook kick , after the kick has made contact where does it go, straight down or back to meet the rear foot?
This would depend on your purpose. If closing the gap with the kick, you would touch down directly from the kick, in range and ready to attack the opponent further.
3: In the on guard position is it essential to have the lead hand the highest?
NO!!!!! The rear hand is the highest. The lead hand is held lower (about solar plexus height).
I supose it is there for more efficient protection for the head hey
and if you wanted to do a straight lead to the head you wouldn't have to raise you hand first telegraping your movement?
Once again, NO!!!!! The lead hand and forearm are carried lower, aimed at the opponent's nose like a spear. The lead punch or finger jab will come directly from this position with no telegraphic movement. This is the hardest thing for the opponent to see coming. If I carry my lead hand high, it makes it easy to see it coming because (1) it is starting at eye level and (2) the forearm and elbow movement can be seen at the initiation of the strike, thus telegraphing the movement. The idea is for the opponent to see NOTHING that gives away your intention to strike! Aim the forearm at the opponent's nose as if it were the barrel of a gun and the fist of finger jab is the bullet. Where the barrel aims, the bullet goes! I hope you get my meaning here!
