hey guys,
first of all i would like to say congratulations on lamar davis with is new kwoon when it is open every one get down there should be a blast!

ok,
knowlege is one thing but action is very very different!
i did some sparring the other day and i found that the whole relax and go with the flow in fighting was outa the window 10 secs in! all i could think about was getting a kick and i was very jerky to rigid...

keeping in mind that physical factors like speed and footwork could always be improved i just felt that i was not ...(hard to descirbe) flowing..
but yeah as i said i need to improve the timing and speed in delivery and recovery but it is just that freaking out actually in the fight that annoys me. afterwards i always think man i was thinking too much during that sparring match! but when im in the fight all i can do is fret and try way to hard!
any comments?

dani

Relax & Explode!

March 28 2005, 9:57 AM

Hi Dani!

Thanks for the congrats on the new kwoon! We had our first event there yesterday, and it went well. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the training and had a blast. We didn't get everything finished, so we still are not at the "take some photos" point, but we are definitely getting closer to being there!

As for your problem, you must train your body to relax! As Bruce Lee would say, be like water! Just find the cracks in the opponents defense and flow right on through! The more relaxed you can become, the faster you have the capacity to be! I am always telling my students, "RELAX and EXPLODE!" Until you can learn to relax in a sparring situation, you are going to have problems!

Also, don't think about a specific thing that you are going to do, as in "OK, I'm going to do a hook kick right now!" Why? Well, because that might not be the time for the hook kick! Once again to quote Bruce Lee, "Don't think, feel!" When you pause to think about something like that in a sparring situation, the mind tends to momentarily "freeze up", providing a perfect time for an opponent to score on you! Just learn to relax and go with whatever flows naturally based on your positional relationship with the opponent!

Apply these things to your sparring (and regular training) and trust me, you will be much better off! Good luck!

Keep Blasting!

The sparring

March 28 2005, 8:50 PM

Whats up Dani,

I understand what you're talking about when it comes to sparring. When our group first started sparring the techniques were overloading my brain. Instead of flowing, I would stick, freeze ( trying to think about the next move), then get hit ( back into reality). Now I'm more fluid but the trapping still needs work.

Sensetivity training has helped me, I went from having no feeling at all to reacting without even realizing what I was doing. Another thing that help me out was remebering it's only training. Though punches and kicks still hurt with all the protection at least your partner will stop if something serious happens. I think it's better for me to get hit and learn while the gloves are on then get hit and try to survive in the streets.

good luck,

Experience

March 30 2005, 4:20 PM

Well, all I wanted to say, Sifu already said but better explained
All I can just say now is: spar a lot.
Maybe you know some friends who practise martial arts too? Or go to a decent martial arts club and ask some people for some sparring.

Or, what can help too: Go watch matches. Not on television, with your own eyes. Try to make your eyes sense the enemy's weak spots when they move. Dont think in it, sense and you should have made up your mind already what to do in that situation, you should even have done it by then!
Like, when you see a guy stanced, you should directly see things like he placed his hands too high and his belly is wide open.
It all comes with experience. (and that aint easy when you're training solo )
